A Guide to Choosing the Right Biometric Hardware for Your Facility

A practical checklist for evaluating fingerprint, facial and iris hardware against your facility's real conditions.
Match the Device to the Environment
Selecting biometric hardware comes down to four factors: facility size, throughput at peak times, environmental conditions, and budget. A dusty factory floor, a humid coastal plant and an air-conditioned head office each place different demands on a sensor.
Specifications That Matter
When comparing devices, hold vendors to these minimums:
- False Acceptance Rate (FAR): below 0.001%
- False Rejection Rate (FRR): below 0.1%
- Throughput: at least 30 verifications per minute at a busy entrance
- Template capacity: at least 10,000, with headroom for growth
How to Choose a Vendor
For high-traffic entrances, multi-modal devices that combine fingerprint and facial recognition give the best balance of speed and reliability. For clean-room environments such as hospitals and laboratories, contactless iris readers are the better fit. Always request an on-site demo with your actual workforce — laboratory numbers rarely survive contact with a real shift change.
